(By joining this group you are helping to ensure a future. This group is acting as an ONLINE PETITION to STOP the LHC project until a full risk assessment is provided)
LHC beam testing starts August 10, 2008, with first beam collisions September 10, 2008.
RAISE AWARENESS.
THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST EXPERIMENT IN HISTORY...
AND COULD QUITE WELL POSSIBLY BE THE LAST...
The impending startup of the Large Hadron Collider... It will start smashing protons together at 99.999994 percent of the speed of light this Summer at the European Center for Nuclear Research, or CERN, outside Geneva, in hopes of grabbing a piece of the primordial fire, forces and particles that may have existed a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang...
The most powerful, and expensive device ever created. And some of Earth's most brilliant minds (even CERN's scientists), have contended that the particle accelerator, once online, could have destructive, irreversible cosmological consequences...
Before CERN starts operation, there are very grave concerns amongst the scientific community that the extremely high energies produced could cause one of the following catastrophic scenarios:
* CERN creates a black hole
* CERN creates a transition into a different quantum mechanical vacuum
* CERN creates strangelets of matter that are more stable than ordinary matter
(Links to more detailed explanations of these theories below)
These hypothetical theories are complex, but they predict that at very least, Earth would be destroyed within a matter of seconds, to years, to millenia, depending on the theories presented.
For instance, a micro black hole, made of the densest matter in the universe, would plummet to the very core of the earth, then, slowly at first, growing one particle, one quark at a time, start consuming matter at an ever accelerating rate. Scientists have estimated that a stable black hole created on Earth could consume not only France, but the whole planet in a very short time span of between 4 - 7 minutes:
Really Long Link
CERN’s most recent safety report, in 2003, focused mostly on refuting the strangelet threat in the hadron collider and devoted just three pages to black holes, saying they “do not present a conceivable risk.” It gave no odds, although the odds are NOT absolute zero.
One major problem is that society has never agreed on a standard of what is safe in these surreal realms when the odds of disaster might be tiny but the stakes are cosmically high. In such situations, these "guessed" estimates are often no more than “informed betting odds".
The question:
"How improbable does a catastrophe have to be, to justify proceeding with such an experiment?’
It seems to have never of been seriously examined.
Besides that, the random nature of quantum physics means that there is always a minuscule, but nonzero, chance of anything occurring. The odds are big, but yet so small, but any risk like this, is not worth taking. We hardly even know enough about quantum physics or hyper-dimensional theory at this point to even begin to predict what may occur.
And for the record...
I haven't made this group to stop the completion of it, and to be honest, am curious as to what this colossal device could provide us scientifically.
I HAVE MADE THIS PETITION TO PUT THE PROJECT ON HOLD.
A more detailed safety evaluation needs to be done. A FULL risk assessment. One that isn't bias towards certain theories leaving important ideas behind. Too many questions are left unanswered. If these are such great scientists working on the LHC, and I'm sure they are, why can't they provide this...
IMPORTANT NOTE: On Tuesday, March 27, 2007, there was a devastating explosion deep in the tunnel at the CERN particle accelerator complex that actually blew a 20 ton magnet right off its mountings. The explosion filled the tunnel with helium and forced a mass evacuation of the facility.
While the facility was supposed to go online during the summer of 2007, the new startup is tentatively summer of 2008 after 17 miles of magnets have been repaired or replaced.
Even Dr. Lyn Evans, who heads the accelerator project at CERN, said the explosion had been potentially very dangerous. "There was a hell of a bang, the tunnel housing the machine filled with helium and dust and we had to call in the fire brigade to evacuate the place," he said. "The people working on the test were frightened to death but they were all in a safe place so nobody was hurt."
An investigation by the researchers found that BASIC MATH FLAWS HAD CAUSED THE EXPLOSION -- which gives one pause in contemplating - HOW MUCH FAITH CAN BE BESTOWED TO 6,000 SCIENTISTS THAT CAN OVERLOOK BASIC MATH FLAWS?? Not only was this mistake made in the original design phase, but it was also missed on four engineering reviews carried out over a period of four years. The director of Fermilab, Pier Oddone, blithely wrote about the disaster stating that they had caused "a pratfall on the world stage". A pratfall?? Should these Keystone-scientists be entrusted with the fate of the world in their hands??
That age-old question: Will our planet disappear in the twinkling of an eye? - Now becomes a probability if and when the CERN facility is allowed to go on-line in Summer 2008.
I don't know about you... But I'm concerned.

My thoughts: Very scary stuff, and today is the day they are first going to do the test that may well kill us all! well if it all goes to hell, was nice knowing ya ! And I hope we get sucked into a black hole and die quick rather than all the earthquakes and tsnamis.
