My thoughts: Even though I like the whole idea of Halloween I realise that we dont celebrate it here, its american. If we celebrate halloween, we may as well celebrate Thanksgiving too ! I however think we should all celebrate the Day of the Dead from the spanish/mexican culture, that has better meaning to it.

Halloween is a Celtic Pagan custom denoting the end of the year, according to the pagan calendar. It was believed that the spirits of the dead had to be appeased at this time, because the veil between this life and the next became thin. The custom has been carried on by British immigrants to Australia and America.

Yeah it seems strange having Halloween here. I only vaguely knew about it as a kid, and haven't really seen it here, except on TV. What I've seen is pretty tame compared to US

I got involved with it in Hawaii last year, and it was great. there were literally thousands of people, probably over 10,000. All dressed up as all sorts of things (I went as Crocodile Dundee), and wondering around Waikiki from bar to bar and party to party. It was probably the best party I've ever been in, with the amount of people, and very little drama.

When I was a child, in Britain, we did all sorts of things for Halloween. However, when we came to live in Australia it was not much celebrated until ... I can't really remember noticing much going on until I had my own small children. I think that exposure to it from American tv shows is what increased its popularity, which is why many Australians believe it to be an American custom.
